HOW TO PREVENT FADING WITH WINDOW TREATMENTS

Causes of FadingProtecting the decor in your home’s interior is, most of the time, overlooked. We never really think about the sun truly fading our home’s interior, mostly the exterior. However, just as you need to put on some sunblock, the right window treatments can help protect your furniture, flooring, carpets and artwork from the boiling sun. Here are four of our favorite window treatments to prevent fading.

PROTECTIVE WINDOW FILMS OR TINTS

The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends the use of window films to protect your home’s interior. Modern, good-quality solar window films can reject up to 99.9% of the sun’s harmful rays.

A darker film can cut the sun’s heat by up to 79%, but you will sacrifice some light. A lighter film won’t eliminate as much heat, but will allow entry of more light. Another advantage is that window films can decrease cooling costs by up to 50%. A professional in custom window treatments can help you choose the perfect tint for your windows. Window tints can be combined with other window treatment ideas, such as shades, blinds, and drapes to prevent fading and at the same time beautify your home. All these options come with various lift options for window treatments.

SUN-BLOCKING WINDOW SHADES

Window shades are an efficient way to block the sun’s heat, while still being able to incorporate your personal style. According to the United States Department of Energy, a medium-colored fabric backed with white plastic lining can reduce solar heat gain by up to 33%.

If you don’t like the thought of a plastic liner, another option is shades with a lighter colored fabric on one side and a darker hue on the reverse.

These sun-blocking window shades can be changed according to the seasons and holidays. In summer, a light color will reflect heat, while in winter a dark color will absorb heat.

TIME HONORED WINDOW BLINDS

Blinds can reduce solar heat gain and give flexibility with respect to how much light and ventilation can be let in. When lowered and closed on sunny, south- or west-facing windows, reflective blinds (white or near white) can reduce heat gain by approximately 45%.

Choose from various styles like mini blinds, classic blinds, cordless blinds, or even vertical blinds for french doors and patio solutions. You also have a choice of materials, including wood, faux wood, bamboo, plastic, and aluminum.

DECORATIVE CURTAINS OR DRAPERIES

Drapes come in a variety of styles, fabrics, and window treatment colors to compliment your decor and help prevent fading. Hang drapes right up to the ceiling or from a cornice box and as close to the glass as possible to create a tight seal.

Custom Silk Draperies

Drapes made from heavy fabrics are nowhere near as effective in keeping the heat out as draperies which are lined. Linings not only provide insulation for warm in the winter and cool in the summer, but they also add body to improve the way the drapes hang.
