Bold and beautiful in Laguna Beach

But even for a doctor and a software executive, the 3,500-square-foot house was interior designer Ohara Davies-Gaetano, even before they moved in. “We loved every bit of it, the wallpaper, the wild colors, the mix and match of it; and that is what Ohara had designed for the previous owners,” Lisa says. “So we contacted Ohara – we met her through the realtor – and we asked her what furnishings we should buy from the previous owners, because we knew we wanted to use her to help us to transition it to make it a house for us.”

She helped them choose a number of items, including those infamous draperies, items integral to her original design.

“They wanted the house because they loved the way it felt, but I really wanted it to be more of a reflection of them and how cool they are. Joe and Lisa are like my coolest clients of all time,” Davies-Gaetano declares. “So there were key pieces that we kept: all the custom-made light fixtures – the chandeliers that have these wild interpretations with color and design – the standing candelabras, the dining room table, the draperies, the outdoor furniture. Then we did all new cushions on the outdoor furniture, new area rugs and some new furniture.” The new items helped put the couple’s personal stamp on the “Spanish revival/global” design she had created earlier.
